Accidents are disorienting — even minor ones. What you do in the first twenty minutes protects your safety, your claim and your repair. Here’s the checklist we give our own customers.
Stopping at the scene is a legal requirement. Turn on hazard lights, and if it’s safe, move vehicles out of live traffic. Check everyone involved — call 999 if anyone is hurt or the road is blocked.
Swap names, phone numbers, registrations and insurer names with the other driver. Then photograph: both cars’ damage, both number plates, the wider scene, road markings and any skid marks. If there are witnesses, take their numbers. If the other driver won’t stop or share details, note the registration and report it to police on 101.
Stay calm and factual. Fault is decided by insurers from evidence — an apology in the heat of the moment can be used against your claim later.
Report the accident promptly (most policies require it within 24–48 hours) even if you don’t claim. When they steer you to their “approved repairer”, remember: the law lets you choose your own bodyshop, and your premium and excess are unaffected. Read more: accident & insurance repairs.
Bumpers and panels hide crash bars, sensors and mounting points. A five-minute photo estimate tells you whether that “cosmetic” knock is hiding something. Send us photos here — it’s free, and you’ll have an answer the same working day.
Local to Ilford or East London? We can collect undriveable vehicles and put you in a courtesy car while yours is repaired. Call 0208 597 7639.
