Do I have to use my insurer’s recommended bodyshop?

Short answer: no. When you report an accident, your insurer will usually offer their “approved repairer” — and many drivers assume that’s the only option. It isn’t. In the UK it’s your legal right to have your car repaired at any bodyshop you choose.

Why insurers push their own network

Approved-repairer networks are commercial arrangements: volume deals at negotiated rates. That’s not automatically bad — but the repairer’s customer in that relationship is the insurer, not you. Cost pressure can mean non-original parts, smart repairs where a panel should be replaced, and your car travelling to wherever the network has capacity.

What changes if I choose my own bodyshop?

  • Nothing about your claim — same excess, same premium, same process.
  • You know who’s doing the work — and can visit, call and see the workshop.
  • The repairer answers to you — our guarantee is written to you, not a network contract.

Watch the phrasing on the phone

Call handlers sometimes say your repair “can’t be guaranteed” outside their network, or that it’ll take longer. In practice a reputable independent guarantees its own work in writing, and — because we handle the claim and engineer approval ourselves — timescales are comparable, often better.

The practical move

Before you accept the insurer’s suggestion, get a second opinion from a local bodyshop you can actually visit. Send us photos of the damage and we’ll tell you what a proper repair looks like — then, if you choose us, we take the claim off your hands from that point on.
